Brian's Corner

Greetings from Bio::Neos! The summer is quickly coming to a close and for many of you this means the start of another semester. This is a busy time for everyone and we thank you for taking the time to read our company's newsletter.

In this issue, we focus on the increasingly popular trend towards Web 2.0 applications. What is Web 2.0 you ask? Although the name may suggest a new version of the World Wide Web, it actually references a new approach to using the existing World Wide Web. Many of you have already experienced this through sites such as Google Maps. Web 2.0 applications offer a more rich and interactive user experience via the web that traditionally was only found in desktop software. This improved user experience combined with the many benefits of the web (most notably the cross-platform accessibility and remote access to your data from anywhere in the world) makes web applications a very useful tool for research organizations.

As the new semester and new grant deadlines approach, please keep Bio::Neos in mind for your software development needs. Bio::Neos has the experience and expertise to create secure, user-friendly web applications to meet those needs. If you have an idea for a system to improve your research, give Bio::Neos a call, we can help turn that idea into a reality.

Web 2.0 Resources

Take a look at these resources for help with your web 2.0 application. Bio::Neos can help implement them into an existing web app or design a new web application utilizing these packages:

  • Script.aculo.us - http://script.aculo.us :
  • This web 2.0 javascript library provides great methods for creating an interactive user interface (UI).
  • Ext JS - http://extjs.com :
  • Ext provides JavaScript, Ajax and UI components to help make your web app more dynamic and interactive.
  • Prototype JavaScript Framework - http://www.prototypejs.org :
  • Prototype provides methods to easily interact with the Document Object Model (DOM) and simplifies AJAX calls.
  • Google Web Toolkit - http://code.google.com/webtoolkit :
  • The Google Web Toolkit (GWT) is a Java framework developed to simplify creating AJAX applications. You develop your code in Java and GWT converts your Java classes into browser-compliant JavaScript and HTML. Their website says it all, "...for developers who don't speak browser quirks as a second language."
  • Ruby On Rails - http://www.rubyonrails.org :
  • If you know the Ruby programming language and need to develop a database-backed web application ASAP, check out Ruby on Rails.
