"Data scalability" is a by-product of improved technologies and techniques. For example, in the "good old days," measuring the expression of a handful of genes was possible with a Northern blot. Nowadays, expression arrays and other techniques can measure the expression of thousands of genes. This multiple orders of magnitude increase in the amount of data generated is data scalability. Conversely, the development of new techniques also leads to "data dimensionality." Not only do expression arrays exist but exon chips, EST sequencing, SAGE, and other techniques may also measure the expression of genes. These multiple sources of measuring what is essentially the same data result in data dimensionality. (To read more about data scalability and dimensionality, check out: Swedlow, Lewis and Goldberg. "Modelling data across labs, genomes, space and time." Nature Cell Biology, S12, Nov 2006. )

A successful scientist may need to fully utilize data scalability and dimensionality. That is where Bio::Neos can help. Bio::Neos has extensive experience developing software to meet the challenges associated with data scalability and dimensionality. This includes software to utilize genome resources for mutation screening, candidate disease gene prioritization, custom primer design, and data storage techniques to aid data analysis. If you have questions about developing custom software, please contact us at: info@bioneos.com Visit our website: http://bioneos.com Or see us at one of the meetings listed below.

Quick & Easy Computer Tips

Here are a couple quick keyboard shortcuts that can come in handy (and maybe amaze some friends):

  • Switching between open applications
    • Windows/Linux: While holding the Alt key down, press and release the Tab key. A window will pop-up showing you all the open applications. Continue to press the Tab key until the application you want to switch to is highlighted. Release the Alt key to switch to that application.
    • Mac OS: While holding the Apple key down, press and release the Tab key. A window will pop-up showing you all the open applications. Continue to press the Tab key until the application you want to switch to is highlighted. Release the Apple key to switch to that application.
  • Quitting an open application
Make sure your work is saved before trying this one...
    • Windows/Linux: Hold down the Alt key and press and release the F4 key.
    • Mac OS: Hold down the Apple key and press and release the Q key.
